CrossFit was founded in 2000 by Coach Greg Glassman and has since grown into a worldwide phenomenon with over 750 CrossFit Affiliates worldwide.   Passion for CrossFit has caught on like wildfire.  When Steel City CrossFit opened in January 2007 it was one of two CrossFit Affiliates in Ontario, there are now 24.   In these uncertain economic times, that sort of small business growth speaks for itself.

CrossFit appeals to three main types of people; those who don’t like the ‘the Gym’, those who love intensity, and those who love results.  To be brutally honest, sometimes the workouts stink.  They don’t stink because they’re bad.  They stink because they’re so good.  Not everyone enjoys gasping for breath and struggling to make it those last few seconds.  But definitely, some masochistic types do.  For people who love to push themselves and test their limits CrossFit is the absolute best option.  For the rest of the natural world, the seduction of CrossFit is the results.  CrossFit makes people feel and look fantastic, especially when the workouts are complemented by a good nutritious diet.  CrossFit influences metabolic and hormonal profiles, bringing the body into a high gear natural balance that’s hard to beat.  Like the runner’s high, only better, because it doesn’t go away.

When it comes to results, the members themselves say it best.   Here are a few things that Crossfit clients have to say:  “He teaches you the CrossFit way, to embrace the unexpected, to challenge yourself, to fight to the finish, to get it done!  The ability and belief that you can do anything that life may throw at you.” And, “Of everything I have done in my 30 plus years of working out this has definitely had the biggest impact on my fitness level.” If losing weight is a goal, look at what Natalie had to say, “… I’ve achieved a level of fitness, strength and body shape that I never even got close to over 15-20 years of so-called gym workouts.  I’ve gone down a dress size and a bit, plus my jeans size is almost two inches less – I’ll repeat… in just 13 weeks!!”

CrossFit doesn’t immediately appeal to those who like routine.  If you like going to the gym and doing the same workout for months, just ‘doin’ your thing’, then the constant variation that is a staple of the CrossFit program may be a turn off.  But, when you stick with it, that turn off is the best way to turn your body on!  Our bodies have an amazing capacity to adapt.  So if we do the same things all the time, our body adapts, and we stop getting results.  One surprising example is long distance joggers. You know, people who enjoy going for runs at the same slow pace.  They think they’re getting in shape, but studies have shown that they’re actually losing fitness!

CrossFit isn’t just fitness.  It’s kicking your life into a new gear.  It brings fitness, yes, but it also brings new friends, new focus, new confidence, and new abilities.  CrossFit can, and does create a new outlook on life.  It can even reverse that seemingly inexorable, inevitable, impending process called time.  We have fifty year old housewives kicking the butts of twenty something young bucks – who thought they were in shape before they came to CrossFit.  A founding member, Trish, had this to say, “I never dreamed that at my age I could accomplish the level of fitness that I have achieved.” So where some fitness programs may claim to make dreams come true, the best thing about CrossFit, in my opinion, is it can make dreams you never even dreamed to dream, reality.  Or, in the more succinct words of Lynn, “It comes down to 2 words…it works!”
